Looking Forward - Piecing Together
19 minutes into this segment there is a call taken by Peter Jennings from Senator John McCain (R-AZ). This act is one that constitutes an act of war was his first sentence. I remember this comment very clearly from this day because (being from Arizona) I was fully aware of his military background. Senator McCain knew already on September 11th that the United States would need to react with force once the enemy was known. Senator McCain also eludes to the fact that our lives will never been the same, referencing the fact that security at airports would need to permanently change which (in fact) it has.
Claire Shipman references 23 minutes into the segment that the President is being taken to another secure location within the country between Louisiana and Washington, DC. The security team informed the President that he would not yet be allowed to return to Washington. During times of National Security, the Secret Service has the right to override the Presidents requests if they feel such requests will cause undue risk to the Presidents security.
Charles Gibson recaps all of the major US events (sports, performances, etc.) which are being canceled due to the events of 9/11 roughly 30 minutes into the coverage.
Rudy Gulianni mentions the need for blood donations about 38 minutes into this segment. On 9/11 people in many major US cities stood in long lines to donate blood, yet another extraordinary event from 9/11.
